For us Catholics and alot of non-Catholics, the loss of this great man is sad. He worked so hard with the youth and so many of the other religions around the world. He wasn't about just doing things for the Catholics, but for so many others, too. He will be remembered by the whole world. Rest in Peace.

The Pope was an amazing man. The first pope to really reach out without softening up the message of the Catholic Church. A man that helped bring down the Iron Curtain and defeat communism. The pope was a prolific author and brought about a revival in the Cathecism. He will be remembered for many centuries as one of the greatest Popes ever. Pope John Paul II even managed to win the MAN OF THE YEAR multiple times. May his soul rest in peace and may the new pope live up to the role set before him. May we all strive to promote himan rights in the way that the Pope did.

If you say so.
I have seen analysis that is not quite as glowing as your message.
Also, word is, they want an older Pope, one that won't rule as long, so they can transition from John Paul II's reign.
Plus, don't forget the Priest Abuse scandal that came to light during his tenure, not to mention the fact this abuse stuff exists and has existed for years.......... I don't think his papacy will be defined by these incidences, but rather, will be more focused on his travels and reaching out to young people. I'm not trying to stir a religious debate, by any means, I'm also not denegrating your beliefs, just offering an alternative viewpoint.

When your the Pope for that long, there is always going to some bad things with the great things. There's no way for it to be perfect no matter who you are or what your beliefs are. It is unfortunate that a few priests around the world makes it sound like it's a major problem. A few bad apples don't make the whole world batch bad.

I'm not trying to stir a religious debate, by any means, I'm also not denegrating your beliefs, just offering an alternative viewpoint. As with many people, the pope had failings, as does the Church. Sadly enough, while humans run it, it has faults. However, that does not take away from the truths contained in the message. While priests that have abused the position and committed horrible sins and crimes, they are not the majority, nor the whole. I do think that the church needs to go back to letting priests marry and that many of the people, especially in the U.S., became priests hoping that somehow it would lessen the homosexual feelings and pedifilic cravings they had. However, many of the faults of the U.S. section of the Catholic Church cannot be laid at the door of the Pope. He would never condone such acts. However, they will be laid at his door as he was the leader at the time. All that being said, I think that history will look at him in a positive light. A man who helped jews in Poland, helped destroy the communist regime, increased the relations with other religions (both Christian and non-Christian,) and fought for human rights around the world.

Not being a Catholic and a believer but not Religous his passing saddened me but I didn't feel as if it was a World altering event. I may catch HADES for saying that but sorry it's how I feel.
Overall I thought he did an outstanding job reaching out to the world with his message and can only hope his legacy isn't tarnished by a few incidents.

If he is supposed to be all powerful within the church, he should have known that all this bad stuff is happening. He should have dealt with it before it leaked to the media.
But other than that he did a decent job. No disrespect is meant toward him.

He heard there was some creepy stuff going on, but, unlike the guilty priests, "he was unable to put his finger on it....."

But other than that he did a decent job. No disrespect is meant toward him. All powerful....hmmmmm......I think that Pope John Paul would have pointed out that no one is all powerful, and that he probably considered himself just a servent of the lord. As for the possibility that he knew exactly what was going on...maybe...maybe not. Who knows if everyone in the church knew, or since it was centralized in the the US, did the cardinals and arch bishops keep it a secret from everyone else. And as for dealing with it before it leaked to the media. I hate the very idea. As much as I would love for it to have never gotten out, I am glad that it did. How much do we not know about (both in religion (Catholic, Christian, Muslum, etc) and government) because it was fixed before it leaked. Sounds like everyone living in the dark.......now that would be horrible. Again though...I think he would, was, ashamed of the controversy. I think that those thoughts were so far from his own head that he would have problems comprehending what those fathers were thinking. I have problems comprehending it. From growing up as an alter boy and never having to deal with anything of the sort, to being an adult now, I will never understand anyone who can take advantage of a small child, male or female. Even in God's eyes, it is a horrible sin to take the one thing from a kid that truly makes them see the world through rose colored glasses - innocense. I think that the priests that did what they did and the ones that helped to cover it up had better get to praying that God will forgive them. But that is not really for me to judge. Luckily, I guess, for me, being someone who thinks he was a great man, I think that history will remember him in a good light and reflect only slightly on the mistakes and faults that he, like everyone, has!
