Thought for the week of Oct. 24th, 2005
The hypocracy in the teaching – “Do what you enjoy.”
I was listening to a conversation about a man who went to college as many young people do. He got a BA and MA in Art Therapy. He went off from there and enjoyed a great job at first, but then he gave it all up and went back to school for his PhD in Art Therapy and started teaching poor and disabled children. He went from making over $200,000 a year to making just enough to pay all the bills of his modest lifestyle. While he was in Hawaii teaching he would sleep on the beach or in someone’s home….that’s right, he has no house. He has now moved to Alaska, and spend most of the nights on a gymnasium floor. He still is making nothing, but he is probably one of the happiest people around. He loves his job and is making a difference.
I am not saying that this lifestyle is for everyone or even for most people…this man has no wife or kids to worry about. However, how many of us tell our kids to do what they enjoy, cause happiness is more important than anything else, but we push them to be doctors and such cause those are the high paying jobs and the prestigious jobs? I understand that we all want the best for our kids, but the truth is that we instill the money issue more than the happiness. Is it cause most of us are not really happy with our jobs? I don’t really have the answer for that, but it is something for you to ponder…
Which is more important; the happiness, the prestige, or the money? Are you really happy with your job or do you do it cause you have to?
